When Jesus speaks of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, He is revealing God’s life and nearness to us.
The Father is God as the loving source, the One who sends, cares, commands, and receives our worship.
The Son is Jesus Christ, God made known to us in human life; He reveals the Father, saves, teaches, and brings us to God.
The Holy Spirit is God’s living presence with and within believers; Jesus calls Him the Comforter and Spirit of truth.
Jesus does not present them as one divine communion of love and purpose.
Christians often call this mystery the Trinity: one God, known as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Biblical Reference
Jesus names all three together after His resurrection:
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”
— Matthew 28:19
At Jesus’ baptism, all three are shown together: Jesus the Son is baptized, the Spirit descends, and the Father speaks from heaven:
“He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
— Matthew 3:16–17
Jesus also explains His unity with the Father:
“He that hath seen me hath seen the Father… Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me.”
— John 14:9–11
And He describes the Holy Spirit as the Comforter:
“I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter… Even the Spirit of truth.”
— John 14:16–17
Present-Day Translation
Today, Jesus would invite you not only to understand this as a doctrine, but to live inside this relationship.
Pray to the Father with trust, as a beloved child. Follow the Son, Jesus, by learning His way of love, humility, forgiveness, and truth. Listen to the Holy Spirit, who comforts, convicts, guides and reminds you of Jesus’ words.
A simple way to remember it is this: the Father loves you, the Son comes to you, and the Holy Spirit lives with you to guide you home to God.
