What Is Grace?

Grace is God’s loving kindness given freely, not earned, purchased, or deserved. Jesus would describe grace not merely as an idea, but as the heart of God moving toward sinners, the weary, the ashamed, and the lost.

Grace does not mean God ignores sin; it means God comes near to rescue, forgive, heal, and make new. In Jesus, grace is God saying: “Come home. I will receive you, cleanse you, and teach you to walk in love.”

Biblical Reference

John describes Jesus this way:

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us… full of grace and truth.”

— John 1:14

He also writes:

“For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”

— John 1:17

A clear picture of grace appears in Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son. The son had wasted everything, yet when he returned, the father did not meet him with rejection but with mercy and restoration:

“But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran…”

— Luke 15:20

Paul later explains grace plainly:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

— Ephesians 2:8-9

Present-Day Translation

Today, Jesus would show grace by meeting people with truth and compassion at the same time. He would not shame the broken, but He would invite them into a new life. He would forgive, restore dignity, and call people to walk with Him.

To live in grace today means receiving God’s mercy humbly, refusing to boast in your own goodness, forgiving others as you have been forgiven, and becoming a safe place where wounded people can encounter the kindness and truth of Jesus.
